I changed the thermostat and the water pump on my 1995 escort 1.9 liter. It is still overheating, but only part of the time. I don't know what else it could be. I am open for any ideas. I thought about flushing the radiator, but didn't know if that would help. The heater blows hot, so I don't think it could have to do with the heater core. Please some one let me know..
I have a 1995 ford escort. changed the water pump and thermostat, but still over heats?
Flushing it can never hurt. Also make sure the fan is working like it's supposed too.One other thing to check is the hoses.Get the engine hot then look at the hoses and make sure none of them are collapsing.Rev the engine too while your looking at them and make sure they still look ok.Sometimes an old radiator hose will do that and drive you crazy trying to diagnose an overheating problem. If the fan isn't working right you could have a relay or temperature sensor going bad.

are the fans chugging away while it is overheating??
I would flush the radiator and see how dirty it really is.
Also maybe one of your hoses could be partially blocked.
How can you tell it is overheating, could it be a bad temperature sensor or overheat switch? ie only an indication problem
Check transmission for slippage.
Change the rad cap to ensure it is working and not building up pressure before evacuation into the coolant bottle.
If you're lucky without any major problems, just a change of coolant (and your flush) will help, because you might be full of muck, and mixed brands of anti-freeze.
Flush the radiator and the block.
Make sure you run it good when you do this.
Especially the block, make up a fitting so it has high pressure.
once it's all together be sure to check for collapsing hoses.
Well I'd try for sure to make sure the fan is working , plus I'd flush the rad especially if it's not been flushed in some time , plus I'd check the antifreeze mixture with a antifreeze tester.
Basically the fan should engage once the car is sitting idling for about 5 Min's or so , plus the antifreeze can wear out after a few yrs and that could cause the overheating problem or gunk build up in the rad.Be sure not to mix the antifreeze and water more then 50/50 , plus I'd try using a flush kit that you can buy yourself cheap.
You've not really said how and when it's overheating but basically if overheating while idling then usually the fan or fan sensor or relay is faulty or it's the wrong antifreeze mixture. If it's over heating once driven on hwy then more then likely the water pump is faulty , plus if it only over heats when the A/C is on then probably a fan is faulty or it's fan related.
Hope that helps and best of luck.
Sounds like a head gasket issue Im afraid-contact me if interested in verifying it swinny

I got a heat pump and when i turn A/C on the heat strips run at the same time,i changed thermostat,no diff?
Chances are you got some wires crossed. We can address that relay problem that all these %26quot;pros%26quot; are talking about later. For now let's keep it sim[ple and address the most likely problem which is homeowner error.
Be honest. Did this problem just suddenly occur or did it start after you messed around with the thermostat?
Take the thermostat cover off and touch the red wire to the yellow and see if this still happens. This should energize your AC mode only outside. Then disconnect shortly after wards.
Now go to the furnace turn off the %26quot;light%26quot; switch on the side to kill all power. Go back to the thermostat and jumper the green, yellow, and red. Now go turn the switch back to ON at the furnace....sit and listen....your indoor blower should come on and the AC should start outside (might be a slight delay).
If these are the only wires jumped together at the thermostat and your AC is working alone then you obviously have miswired something.
These wire colors are generally the colors used. In other words jumping RC, G, and Y.....should get your air conditioner going. That is if everything is wired correctly from that point to the rest of the controls. These terminal designations are also kind of generic. Who knows what kind you bought and what they are using for terminal designations.
If you are still getting heating then you might have an issue with a relay in the heat pump.

Your thermostat might need to be cleaned or calibrated. This is what I check first. This link is a troubleshooting guide.

make sure the wires are not touching in the thermostat, if they are not then I would say the relay is fried
it sounds to me the relay for the heat isnt dropping out this can be checked bt removing the white wire at the the stat and placing a jumper acrossr and y if the heat comes on still there is a relay issue
you should be able to fix this at the thermostat providing your wired correctly at the other end.pull the heat wire off and try again.you have a red power supply,a fan wire, a cool wire, a heat wire and for a heat pump probably a couple more.
either you have a short on low voltage red or yellow to emergancy heat or sequenser is stuck
sounds like you have a sequencer energizing when it shouldn't,check your low volt wires in the heat panel make sure they are secure and not touching, also check to see if you have contactors instead of sequencers, one may be stuck in the open position causing it to stay on,what ever it is will be in the area where all the wiring is for the heat system, make sure you don't have any low volt wires touchinghowtogetevenwithyourex server

I am a female atempting to change thermostat in a cryslerlebaron 1992 3.0 motor any good free sites to see how
Your best bet is to go down to Auto Zone or Advance Auto and pick up a Haynes Manual on your car. This will kill many birds with this stone cuz it covers the hole car and you all ways know where to find it.

changing the thermostat is any easy task to do. if you bought this vehicle used, and this is the first time that the thermostat is being changed, then better to get it done at the shop. The bolts that hold the thermostat housing on tend to be overstressed, and break when you try to take them off. Then, you could end up spending a paycheck getting the broken bolt out, having the block re-tapped, getting an odd sized bolt put back in the hole, and your antifreeze will leak out of this housing from now on.
Personally I would recommend the Chilton Manual. I own both the chilton and the haynes and the chilton manual is better in my opinion. As said above it will help you out for the entire car.

How to change the thermostat in a 98 Ford Taurus?
follow the upper radiator hose to were it connects to the engine that is the thermostat housing,be sure to open the small radiator petcock valve at the bottom of the radiator(be sure vehicle is cool)remove hose from thermostat housing, remove thermostat housing taking note on how the thermostat sits cause that is how the new one will sit spring toward engine block, clean mating surfaces gasket may consist of a paper gasket or oring,be sure to brush offf any residue on the mounting bolt threads and replace if they look stretched or pitted, dont over tighten and use a small amount of silicone if a paper gaket is used a o-ring would be instaled dry, reconect radiator hose make sure radiator drain is closed, and fill with 50/50 mix of coolant and bleed system if equipped with bleeders,if unsure consult repair manual hopes this helps.

What would be the first common signs of a incorrectly installed thermostat on a 1991 jeep cherokee inline 6?
i just changed my thermostat on my 91 jeep cherokee inline 6 about 1 week ago. and ive noticed my car has run at around 150 -180degrees which is kind of colder than usual. around 1/4th the way up on my gauge sometimes... is this ok? or could the tstat been installed wrong?
What would be the first common signs of a incorrectly installed thermostat on a 1991 jeep cherokee inline 6?
the thermostat opens as its heated by the coolant. thus allowing hot coolant to pass back to the radiator to be cooled off. and once the engine has filled with colder coolant, the thermostat will cool off as well and close again. until the coolant in the motor gets too hot again and the thermostat opens again, etc, ect...
the way you can tell your theremostat is working is the engine will get hotter and hotter, and then will go down again a little, each time the thermostat is heated to the point that it opens up and allows the hot coolant to escape. just watch the guage carefully and if you can see the needle moving back and forth and the engine getting cooler, hotter, cooler, hotter, you'll see you have a working cooling system
the temp difference is normal and very likely you have a lower temp thermostat. lower temp thermostats open up at lower temperatures. for some people it's a personal preference what temp they want their vehicle to run at.
but it's also very common here in canada to put a low-temp thermostat in during winter. because it doesn't take as long to heat the fluid to 160 instead of 180, allowing hot coolant from the engine to get to the heater core much faster and warm the inside of the car.
What would be the first common signs of a incorrectly installed thermostat on a 1991 jeep cherokee inline 6?
Overheating or not getting warm at all, it depends.
It's possible that you vehicle was just running warmer than normal before too. Maybe with aa new thermostat it's running where it should, check owners manual.
If it were installed incorrectly it would over heat.
If it's running too cool you may have an incorrect one that's opening too soon
Maybe you put too cool of a stat in. Recheck what was supposed to be installed.
Could be normal tho, so keep an eye on your MPG.
sounds like you installed a lower temp thermostat then was in it cause if you have run it for a week and it hasn't over heated or leaked it is probably installed correctly

How do you change a thermostat on a 94 nissan pathfiner?
Its usually at the end of the upper radiator hose. Remove hose and unbolt thermostat housing. Remove old thermostat and gasket or O-ring and replace. Put back together add coolant.
How do I change a thermostat in my 1999 dodge dakota?
to change a thermostat first you need to drain the cooling system, then remove the upper radiator hose. On the spot where it was connected to the engine you will see 2 or 3 bolts holding a rounded fitting onto the engine. remove that fitting and your thermostat will be in there. pull out the old one and replace it. Remove the old gasket and replace it with a new one. (use silicone if you desire, but not too much). Then put the hose back on, fill the radiator, start it up and check for leaks. Heres a link to a page with some pics of different thermostat housings that might help you.
