Polo overheats despite change of thermostat

The coolant level is correct. The thermostat has been changed. the car boils over after being driven a few miles. What could be the reason.
Polo overheats despite change of thermostat
Most likely the waterpump impeller has came loose from the shaft. When it spins slow it grabs onto the shaft. When it turns fast the impeller slips on the shaft.

First thing to do is once is gets hot, after ripping around the block. Get out and pop your hood. Check to see if coolant is flowing back to the coolant bottle from the little hose connected to the side of it. It not then let it cool down and...

Under the intake on the passenger side is the thermostat housing. Two 10 mm bolts hold it onto the block. If your next to the alternator, your in the right spot. Take those out and pull out the thermostat. Stick your finger in the hole and to the left and feel the waterpump. You shouldn't be able to move the waterpump impeller. If you can spin it with you finger, then it's bad.
Polo overheats despite change of thermostat
Thermostat is not opening. BECAUSE the way you refilled the coolant was wrong. You have air on one side of the thermostat(and air never gets hot enough) to open the thermostat...so you overheat.

To correct. Let it cool. Pull off lower rad hose and drain block and rad of coolant(again) Now put on lower rad hose to rad and the thermostat housing to the block. Pull off top rad hose and pour coolant down the hose pipe into the motor and fill it up. When full, reconnect rad hose to top of rad. Now fill the rad and the overflow container. Now coolant is on %26quot;both%26quot; sides of the closed thermostat.(no air pocket). Car should work fine.//Note: this will also be the reason why the fan was not coming on either,,,because fluid was not flowing past the temperature sensor for the fan.

The Most Likely reason
This could be bad news. It could be a blown head gasket. I had one on a Datsun pickup truck. The engine heated up very quickly. I repaired it myself. When I removed the head I had expected the head gasket blown to bits and pieces, but all I could find was a tear from one of the head bolts toward the cylinder. I guess because of the pressure in the system the water quickly ran into the cylinder.

So one test to make to prove that the head gasket is blown is to take out the spark plugs and then crank the engine to see of any water is coming out of any of the spark plug openings.

Please, don't assume that I am correct with this, don't take off the head until you have evidence that what I suggest is indeed true. LOL
is the coolant system a pressurized system? if it is and you have opened it it will continue to overheat until you bleed the system

  • How do I change the thermostat on a 1992 Chevy Blazer S10 4.3L?

I have a 1992 Chevy Blazer S10 4.3L that needs a new thermostat, and I don't know anyone that can help me, so I want to do it myself. Any help would be appreciated, I know nothing about trucks - thanks!
How do I change the thermostat on a 1992 Chevy Blazer S10 4.3L?
If you follow the upper radiator hose to the engine, you will see where the hose connects to the thermostat housing, which is a flange held to the engine by two bolts. Soak these bolts with penetrating oil for a day or two before starting the job, just to be safe, they might be seized up. Have a large drain pan under the engine before you start, because engine coolant will spill. You will probably want to wear rubber gloves when doing this job, as coolant will be spilling and it's a little nasty.

First, loosen radiator cap, then remove it. Unclamp the radiator hose from the thermostat housing, and then twist and pull off the hose. You might need channelock pliers to break the hose loose from the housing flange, many times it is stuck on there good. Be prepared for coolant to spill when the hose comes off, this is where your drain pan comes to the rescue. Now tie the loose end of the radiator hose out of the way, and then remove the two bolts holding the housing to the engine ( 9/16 or 14mm wrench size ).

You will likely see ground wires attached to these bolts, if you break them, be sure to repair them afterwards, or you will have issues with the electrics of the vehicle.

Once the bolts are out, then pull the housing off the engine, you may need to use a large screwdriver for leverage to pop it off. A little more coolant spills at this time.

Remove thermostat from engine, and then clean all traces of old gasket material from the sealing surfaces of the thermostat housing and the engine. Use a razor scraper to do this, which can be bought very cheaply at an auto parts store. Use care when scraping, do not gouge or nick the metal. For stubborn gasket material, spray on some gasket remover spray and let it soak for a while. Use rags to clean and dry off the surfaces.

Once that is done, place the thermostat on the engine with the spring end DOWN. Make sure the thermostat is positioned properly in the recessed area of the engine opening. Then apply the new gasket (which came with the new thermostat) onto the sealing area of the engine. Coat both sides of the gasket with a very thin layer of silicone sealer made for this, available at the auto parts store, before you install it. Then position the thermostat housing on top, and install the two bolts, snug them both down first, then tighten them both a little at a time. This is to ensure that the cover gets tightened down evenly to avoid leaks. Don't forget to put the ground wires back on to those bolts. Then re-clamp the hose on to the cover. Top up the cooling system slowly until it is full, use a 50/50 coolant-water mix, don't just add plain water because it will weaken the strength of your coolant. Then put the rad cap back on, making sure the arrow is pointing to the overflow hose (important).

Start the engine, and let it run until it is at operating temperature. In the meantime, ensure that the thermostat cover is not leaking. When the upper radiator hose is hot, that means the engine is warmed up and that the thermostat is now open, allowing coolant to flow into the radiator.

Shut the engine off, and let it cool off for about 20 minutes or so, then carefully remove rad cap, and top off radiator as required. Top off overflow bottle if required.

Good luck with this! If you need any more info, feel free to ask!
How do I change the thermostat on a 1992 Chevy Blazer S10 4.3L?
On a cold engine, loosen the radiator petcock at the bottom of the radiator. Allow about 2 quarts of fluid to drain into a pan or bucket, then close it. Follow the upper radiator hose to where it connects to the engine. This is the thermostat housing, it is held in place by two bolts, one is a stud with a ground wire on it attached with a nut. With the nut and two bolts removed, remove the housing. Inside you will see the thermostat, note how it is positioned so you don't put the new one in backwards. Remove all the old gasket material and assemble with a new gasket and tighten bolts securely, refill the radiator and run engine until the thermostat opens and top off the fluid reservoir to the proper level. Good Luck
You will have to consult with NASA, this is a real complicated problem! (not really). Ask at the parts store, read an open manual there. Do yourself a favor and don't use Dex-Cool coolant, Flush system out and use Mercedes Benz coolant. Read the GM litigation web-site about troubled GM owners!! The thermostat housing can usually be found at the opposite end of the upper radiator hose. The housing usually has 2 screws. Good Luck!!
Easy easy. On top of the engine where the radiator hose comes out you need to remove the aluminum piece it is connected to. Two bolts 13 or 14mm I believe, are all that holds it on. You may have to pry a little to get it off. underneath of that there is the thermostat. You might be able to get away with re using the old gasket if you seal it up with some silicone.

How do I change the thermostat on my car?

Is it something that I could do myself (I am pretty good with cars, as is my husband) or should I take it to the shop and have them do it?

It's a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus if that matters
How do I change the thermostat on my car?
It depends on the car, but mine takes me about 2 minutes to do.

Usually it's a really simple procedure.

    What size motor is it?
How do I change the thermostat on my car?
If you can change your oil, you can change a thermostat. $10 and you're done.
take it in to a shop. chrysler thermosta housings are made plastic. and a tendacy to brake when removing it. if all goes ok parts and labor should around $150.00 at most.
    $150!!!!???? no way!

Its easy enough, its in a housing where the hose from the radiator meets the engine block,

Disconnect the hose from this housing. (coolant will piss out, never worry.)

Undo the bolts (usually about 3) on the housing that hose came out of.

It should come off/apart exposing the old thermostat, tap or twist it out.

Flush the engine and radiator with water, and drain out as much as possible by removing as many hose connections as u can see.

Replace new thermostat into housing, (pointy end toward engine) and re-assemble housing, making sure all mating faces are clean and smooth for a good seal!

    Re-connect all hoses.

Replace new coolant mixture into the coolant tank, It will only let u put in about half, as the thermostat it cold/closed and it cant circulate.

Run the engine, once the thermostat opens/warms, it will suddenly drag the coolant through the engine, top it up again and switch off when it gets too hot!!! repeat till the coolant is fully circulated and the level stabalises.

Mine took about 6 litres, depends on the car tho...
Varies from car to car, but most have the thermostat in the top radiator hose housing on the cylinder head.

To change it, you remove the housing, pull out the thermostat, clean out the inner housing, replace the thermostat using a new gasket or silicon sealer if you don't have a gasket, and replace the housing and top radiator hose.

Not a big job. If you're unsure get a copy of the auto manual from your local library just read and confirm.

I have a chevy 94 astro van and was running cold so i changed the thermostat and now it's overheating?

i put in two new thermostats from autozone and still overheating, before it would run cold old thermostat was stuck in the open position. any ideas?
I have a chevy 94 astro van and was running cold so i changed the thermostat and now it's overheating?
I'm thinking you are putting the thermostats in backwards. The end with the springs go in the engine.
I have a chevy 94 astro van and was running cold so i changed the thermostat and now it's overheating?
Aftermarket thermostats are really bad but new ones rarely produce actual overheating - they just fluctuate a lot. Make sure the working part, the end with the pellet at the end of the spring, is inside the engine. Before messing with it you may want to get a good thermostat from the dealer. I got disgusted with aftermarket thermostats about 1 years ago.
your new thermostat may be too hot of a thermostat or it may not be working. the new thermostat may have been intalled wrong. Or by a long shot your pump may have gone out
You probably have air in the system still. Do u have good heat coming out the vents?
    Did U put in t'stat upside-down?

I have a 93 Ford Escort started over heating, I have changed the thermostat, no coolant in oil, no smoke ?

I do not see any leaks, but if you drive it and look, there is coolant all over the motor. Also with a new thermostat, the top hose is still hard, like the coolant is not flowing. Help anyone.
I have a 93 Ford Escort started over heating, I have changed the thermostat, no coolant in oil, no smoke ?
If coolant is seen on top of motor ,possible one of the small coolant hoses that preheat the air intake plenum is leaking.Do you see any oil floating on top of your coolant inside the radiator? Another thing is when starting the cold engine see if the radiator hose gets hard quickly. This can be a sign of a head gasket leaking compression into the cooling system. No coolant in the oil doesn't mean you don't have a head gasket blown. The leak can be only 1 way, from cylinder to cooling system.Just depends on how bad head gasket leak is. Another thing it can be is cooling fan or the thermostatic switch which usually screws into radiator.Or the fan relay. Hope this helps you.
I have a 93 Ford Escort started over heating, I have changed the thermostat, no coolant in oil, no smoke ?
Have the radiator flushed it is that old it a good Idea.
started overheating hmm...back up ck your work thermo installed with no cracked housing? and look at all hoses...heater hoses..small hose for cracks.....You need to find out where coolant is coming from..is the engine boiling over out of recovery tank or radiator? You need to find source of original overheating.....and hope its a hose somewhere...ck them all....good luck!
go to advanced or auto zone and borrow the coolant pressure tester, it hooks onto the radiator, look at the radiator cap for psi, like 12 psi or something like that then pump the tester to 12 psi and you will find your leak, if it has no leaks then the pressure will hold, watch the gauge

How do you change the thermostat on a 1991 Cutlass Supreme?

this is a fairly simple repair,

first pop the hood and locate the upper radiator hose. follow that from the radiator too the engine. on most vehicles that is where the thermostat is located.

On older GM cars the thermostat is located under the radiator cap. make sure the engine is cool and take the cap off. its most likey under there. just pull it out and put the new one in.

IF its not under the cap (it should be), then it will be on the engine at the end of the upper radiator hose. there will be a housing that you must remove. it should he held in place by a few bolts. unbolt them and pull the housing off. the thermostat should be under there. just pull it out and replace it. when you put the housing back on put some RTV sealant on the housing surface so it will not leak.

whenever you do something with coolant be careful not to spill it. if you do make sure you clean it up asap so the neighborhood dogs and cats dont drink it.

    Good luck.

Have you thought about keeping the thermostat and changing the 1991 Cutlass?
How do you change the thermostat on a 1991 Cutlass Supreme?
i mechanic for a living,,and if you,ll follow the top radiator hose down,,you,ll see a housing that bolts to the engine,,remove it,and the thermostat is in under it,,remove it,and replace the thermostat ,be sure and drain some of the coolant out before you do this,it will rush out on you if you don't,,good luck hope this help,s.
Follow the radiator hose from the top of the radiator to the top of the engine. There will be a small piece that bolts to the engine (usually three bolts) and attaches to the hose. Pull this off. pull out the old thermostat, and install your new one, making sure you have it right side up. Clean the old gasket material off of both the block and the thermostat housing and install a new gasket. Don't try to save $5 and use the old one, you will be sorry. Replace your housing and tighten the bolts. Top off your coolant reservoir with new antifreeze, and you are good to go! All parts should be readily available at any good auto parts store. This is a great project to start with if you don't know much about working on cars. If you want more comprehensive information, the auto parts store will have a repair manual specifically for your car for about $10. This will help with any other repairs, also. Good luck!

  • How do I change the thermostat on a 1995 oldsmobile achieva?

Drain off some coolant and locate where the thermostat housing is. All GM motors have the thermostat before the upper rad hose. Depending what type of motor you have, you have to access this housing. Most likely you have a 3.1L motor that requires some exhaust disassembly of lots of swivel sockets to access the right bolts to get the housing off and on. The thermostat housing is on the drivers side of the motor at the rear of the intake. I would suggest that if you have never done this, get someone with experience to help you or pay someone to do it.
How do I change the thermostat on a 1995 oldsmobile achieva?
Trace the top radiator hose to an aluminun looking housing and when ya get it off under there is the thermostat. What is it doing? Overheating or not getting hot? I believe around that year the htr. control unit could go bad if it has a thermometer for setting the temp. The one in the dash, that is.I have seen these go badAlso , if you start your car when its cold with the radiator cap off and let it run till it reaches 190-210 degrees the thermostat will open and if the fluid level drop down below the radiator hose you just need to add some antifreeze..Hope this helps

I have a 96 dodge Ram van 2500. put in new radiator, since then no heat, changed thermostat still no heat.?

I checked the heater core hoses and 1 is hot and the other is luke warm. Plus there is the faint smell of coolant inside and outside the vehicle while running. Is the heater core plugged or just shot?
I have a 96 dodge Ram van 2500. put in new radiator, since then no heat, changed thermostat still no heat.?
then you know your answer heatcore is bad or plugged if you can smell coolant most likely its leaking also replace it best choice
I have a 96 dodge Ram van 2500. put in new radiator, since then no heat, changed thermostat still no heat.?
since you already replaced everything else it could be the heater core or maybe the water pump
Does the truck still get HOT on the gauge? check with the cap (radiator) off to make sure water is moving! look at water pump to see if it is leaking. also check the fan blade itself!

You can see if the core is plugged by removing hoses and try and blow air through with air hose. But be carful so you don't use to high of preassure! if air blows through freely then there is nothing wrong with the core, recheck the themostat, I have gotten %26quot;bad%26quot; new ones before!
you probly need to run it for an hour or 2 there is probly air in the line from being drained and it needs to work itself out

My car heats up fast even though I changed thermostat. Instead of hot air, it's cold. What's going on?

Please Help! I have a Dodge 2002 and it's been so much trouble recently. I drove from TN to CA and as soon as I got to LA, I had to LITERALLY stop every 2-3 miles to cool off my car. Before driving in a long distance, I changed thermostat. I had to stop because the heating arrow will go all the way up. I'd take off thermostat and let it cool off then put it back. Radiator guys told me there was an air when I was changing thermostat so they did smt. I was afraid my accumulator is starting to mess up and my car is useless, but they said it's fine. My air conditioner was working perfectly for about 2 weeks until the arrow went back up again. Does anybody know what's going on? That would suck if I have to replace my waterpump cause it's so pricey
My car heats up fast even though I changed thermostat. Instead of hot air, it's cold. What's going on?
CHECK THE FAN, IT MIGHT NOT BE WORKING PROPERLY
My car heats up fast even though I changed thermostat. Instead of hot air, it's cold. What's going on?
did you drill a little hole in the thermostat before it was installed? This keeps the air from getting trapped where coolant SHOULD be.

    http://www.mgfcar.de/thermostat/Dcp_5568鈥?/a>

also make sure your antifreeze is mixed 50/50 with water!

when the heater blows cold, that means there isnt enough water in the system.
There is a thermostat which regulates the flow of coolant, and then there is a temperature sensor. See if you can find/replace that, it may be giving false readings.

If there's air in your coolant system, leave that cap off that you're not supposed to take off when the engine is hot and run it with that open till it stops bubbling. (if there is air in your system however, you would get %26quot;bubbles%26quot; where your engine temp would rise at a swift rate and then return to normal after a little while)

Has the level of coolant been going down? If it hasn't then your water pump is likely fine, they tend to leak when they go.

Otherwise I'd say maybe it's a head gasket?

And check to see that the fan is working first of course.

How to chage a mazda 626 thermostat?
Make sure to get the same temperature thermostat and a new gasket or O ring when you buy it. Remember which way the thermostat sits on the engine block when you remove it. You might want to change that upper radiator hose at the same time. Buy some worm drive hose clamps too.
How to chage a mazda 626 thermostat?
drain a little coolant from the radiator to lower the fluid level below the thermostat

remove the radiator hose from the engine block. it's in there somewhere. you might have to move a few things. just don't move the distributor.
remove the housing, make sure you put the thermostat back in the same way up as the old one was with a new 'o' ring. If it still pressurises and blows water out you are looking at at least a new cylinder head gasket or water pump.

Is it hard to change the thermostat on a 5 series BMW?

Also, if it's running hot, isn't this the first thing to try? What else might be the problem? Thanks.
Is it hard to change the thermostat on a 5 series BMW?
It is entirely dependant on the year and engine as to the difficulty of the T-stat change out.

Well the first thing I would do is check your coolant level. Sorry,I am not meaning to be a wise guy by saying that but I have learned on this board to not forsake of take steps for granted.

After that make sure it holds coolant.

Check for obstructions froward of radiator.

Confirm electric fan operates and goes up to speed

If not electric the fan clutch should stop the blade from being turned by hand immediately when vehicle off

    Start and warm up.

Note flow going into pressurized recovery chamber.

while running, with glove, squeeze upper radiator hose slightly. You should be able to recognise flow activity inside it.

confirm that air is bled out of system.

BMW's typically use a finer resolution core to allow more radiator cooling capacity. The flip side to this is that they may clogg easier, especially along the bottom of the radiator. If there is a large amount of coolant going into the pressure recovery chamber via a 5/8 bypass hose there is a chance their could be a restriction in the radiator cores.

There is really no sense in flushing the unit on the vehicle. better to give it a good backflushing and look in the bottom with an inspection mirror. If there is still lots of sediment then take it to a radiator shop.

Check to see in coolant has been escaping via the weep hole of the water pump. If so then chances are the the pump is bad. Confirm that the drive belt is within spec of the driven water pump pully, and nothing slick has wound up on it.

Look at the hoses, as they will usually show evident marks where it is leaking.

Only at this point would I consider the T-stat. That is, if all other above has passed.

Not a part that sticks as often as one might think, unless additives were put in the system such as allumafil or stop leaks.

One thing about BMW's is that they are not very shy about coolant problems. They are usually %26quot;in your face%26quot; problems that can be seen

The newer BMW's are equipped with abs couplings that break quite readily. The parts department at BMW has an abundant supply of these and will love to sell you a couple.

    Bring

    Money

    With you

haha get it? As if you didn't already know.

That's about the best general guidance I can give on a 5 series without a year or engine.
Is it hard to change the thermostat on a 5 series BMW?
most cars easy and cheap to do just follow top radiator hose back to top of motor remove hose and two bolts in housing and lift housing off scrape off old gasket replace new gasket and new thermostat about same on all cars some easy some not so much but al some what easy job here a few lick might help you do it but its easy might cost you 30 bucks thermostat like 15 gasket 10 and a jug of coolant
Changing the thermostat is not rocket science. But before doing so

check and be sure that the cooling system has no air bubbles inside, that the coolant level is OK, that there are no leaks and that the water pump is working normally. Spending money on unnecessary repairs sucks.

    To replace:

    a) Detach fan blade from water pump (you need special tools)

    b) Remove radiator fan shroud along with the fan blade from the front of the engine (if you want to make your removal of the thermostat more convenient to do)

    c) Detach the two hoses connected to the thermostat (remember to catch the coolant that drains out below).

    d) Detach the cable/wires connected to the thermostat

    e) Loosen the engine lifting hook at the left front side of the engine since it would block removal of the thermostat

    f) Remove and replace thermostat

    g) Re-install removed parts, add coolant and perform bleeding proper bleeding procedure to remove air inside cooling system.

    Welcome to the DIY club!
Year buddy year. The 5 series goes all the way back to the 70's.
My BMW did this same thing. It would -always- run at 3/4 if not 7/8 the temperature gauge... and stay there. I ran heavy oil in it 10W_40 or 20W-50 always to help, and it was cool because the engine used as little fuel as possible. No reason or anything for this, it also did this after i flushed my radiator myself. Then one day it just made the jump to ovrheat with my best friend at the time in the car. It blew a hose from pressure. She was stronger than i was, so she put the hose back on. Car drove fine, had blown head gasket and i sealed it and it ran fine again.

Is it ok not to use silicone when i change a thermostat gasket?

i just changed my gasket on my 91 jeep and i forgot to put silicone around the gasket.. do i have to do it all over?
Is it ok not to use silicone when i change a thermostat gasket?
I HATE silicone. i've pulled too much of it out of oil ports and other places it plugs things up. It does have its uses but engine parts aren't one of them. If you have cleaned the surfaces good you do not need any sealant. It didn't come out of the factory that way did it? I KNOW you used a new gasket so you shouldn't have any problems. I have been known to use alittle permatex tho. mostly just to hold the gasket while its being installed. The gasket should have come with self adhesive so you don't even need that these days.
Is it ok not to use silicone when i change a thermostat gasket?
if its not leaking leave it alone
No matter what anyone tells you... just wait and see if it drips out. It won't gush out or anything so just check the garage or driveway floor to look for sign of drips. After a week or two and no drips, you will know.
You need something there because the sealer will fill in any gaps or imperfections in t/o housing.
you shouldnt have to unless it starts leaking
Silicone is just used to hold the gasket in place or some people like to use it to make sure it doesn't leak . I f you do decide to use silicone make sure its sensor safe for the sensors in the engine .
i would definately redue...your going to build pressure and its going to leak...use a high temp sealent
not necessarily..most parts now come with a blue seal gasket..so it seals it's self when tightened properly..if you find you can't build up pressure..see a leak..ordon't get at much heat when you turn on your heater..then you may have too..did you check to insure your thermostat coer it's self wasn't warped..you do this by sliding a straight edge across the full length of the thermostat cover.
i own a repair shop, and its OK to use it,,if you forgot to put some on it,,try it and see if its going to leak first before you take it back apart,,it might not if you used a new gasket on it,,and if it does you can drain some of the coolant out of it,and re-do it,,its not that hard to do,as you can see,but id try it first,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.,,have a good -and safe x-mas.
I agree with the wait and sees. If it starts to leak then you will know you should have used some sealant. you might get lucky.
No, as long as it is not leaking, leave it alone
Also please note that if it is a small leak under pressure only, the coolant could potentially evaporate instead of forming a pool. Make sure to check your cold level often the next couple of weeks. A drop at first may be normal, if you had a pocket of air from the initial repair, however, repeated low levels would show you are losing it somewhere.
if it does leak, then i wouldnt bother it.

  • Dirty coolant, just changed thermostat?

Hey everyone me and my buddy where changing the thermostat on my 2001 ford ranger 2.3l truck and realized it was the wrong thermostat so we left it off (coolant was drained with what ever little bit was left in block that didn't drain) couldnt get the thermostat in for 4 days because it was a dealership part and it was saturday. on saturday night and sunday night it never got below 29-25 degrees or so (here in michigan) but he got real worried that the block could crack so we replaced it again with the broken thermostat and put new coolant in and I could still drive it (no heat of course) and its driving fine but it seems like the coolant is a little foamy and dirty after putting bran new coolant in. and i checked the oil and i don't know a whole lot about cars but it had a little bit of white stuff in it only a fingertip's worth and i checked it 7-8 other times and it never showed up again running or not running but it does have a few little bubbles... im worried but it doesn't seem like it got cold enough for the engine to crack and there is no leaks from the thermostat what could this be?
    Dirty coolant, just changed thermostat?
If your coolant is still foamy, try to wait a day or so without driving the car to let it settle. Then check to see if there's oil on top of the coolant. If so, that's a pretty sure sign that your head gasket is leaking or your block cracked, allowing oil to mix with the coolant or vice versa. The white stuff in your oil sounds suspiciously like how coolant looks in oil, too.

On the other hand, if you didn't actually drive the car and you have 50/50 antifreeze/water for your coolant, I seriously doubt that the coolant would've frozen and caused your block to crack. I suppose the foam could've just been from some impurities in the old antifreeze. Unless you flush out your cooling system, you'll have a little bit of old coolant mixed in with the new. That's not catastrophic, though, it'll just shorten the life of your coolant slightly.
    Dirty coolant, just changed thermostat?
make sure you use dexcool (orange) and not ethelyne glycol (green) do not mix the 2 together. when you change the thermo again flush your cooling system completely including block and heater core.

This is from a post I made an hour and a half ago, doing a update so other people can see, I found out that those black specs im pretty sure they are not oil I used a paper towel and pulled some out and they didn't smear like oil, almost looked like plastic...and a few of my responses can be scene if you click on my name and read last question before with same title, read those and tell me what you think i should do

I just went out to look at coolant and you can see very few tiny black spots that almost look like plastic to be honest, not sure if thats oil or not, but the coolant is bright green still just not clear. there where about 10 little specs of black
Dirty coolant, just changed thermostat part 2?
Doesn't sound like anything to worry about. What you need to do though is once you get the new thermostat in open the drains on your radiator put a water hose int the radiator fill and flush the whole system out. It will take a while especially it being as cold as it is. But you need to flush the system. There are some things you can buy to flush it with but reg tap water works fine. Just flush it until anything coming out of the drains is clear. Also, you will need to let the engine run while flushing.... Then shut off the engine let all the water drain out. Then add a jug of anti freeze and fill the rest with water. Check the rating you get with a tester. Dont want to be under protected. The black dots you were speaking of could be from lots of things. Not to worry at this point. Just need to replace therm and flush system. Should be good to go!

You follow your upper radiator hose (i think), and it will lead to a housing, inside that housing is your thermostat. Take the housing off and dont forget to put sealant on it when you put it back on. You might want something to catch anti-freeze with also, it will make a little mess

How do I change a thermostat, hi limit for a Maytag dryer?

I NEED HELP TO CHANGE THE THERMOSTAT, HI LIMIT IN A MAYTAG DRYER
How do I change a thermostat, hi limit for a Maytag dryer?
GIVE US THE MO NO AND SER NO TO GET THE RIGHT ANSWER. ALSO WHAT IS IT DOING WRONG?
How do I change a thermostat, hi limit for a Maytag dryer?
It's simple. First purchase the new limit switch. Then remove the two screws that hold the old one on. Remove the old wires one by one and connect to the new thermostat. Replace the thermostat with the two screws and your finished.
There are other possibilities for it not heating but I'll give you what you asked for. With a puty knife push in two clips located between the top and front front panel. You have to feel for them. They are approx. 1 inch in from both ends, Push in one at a time and hold in while lifting that corner. Older model dryers have two phillip screws 4 inches up from the bottom of the front. Remove those and pull out on the bottom and lift off. Remove two 5/16 screws to allow the top to lift up. The high limit is located behind the drum, top rear. You will see 2 thermostats. They both come in the same kit. The large one is the high limit. The small one is a thermal fuse. Both must be replaced. The thermal fuse will have a pink or yellow dot. The kit comes with a pink and yellow thermal fuse. Replace with the same color. (One is for gas, the other for electric). Word of caution: Attach the wires before reinstalling in case you drop it. The kit is about $25.00. If the vent is blocked or the operating thermostat is stuck closed. Plan on doing it all over again.
what makes you think high limit is bad...most time the cycling limit is the one goes bad or the thermal fuse...how to get to these depends on what model maytag dryer you have....on some the back comes off and all of these are fairly easy to get to....on others you have to pop top up remove front panel take tub out and then replace....on some the bottom front is hinged and it just pulls down and you can see the heating element..high limit is always mounted on the cannister the heating element is in...cycling limit and thermal fuse is usually mounted on the exhaust vent so they can sense tub tempertaure...

Where is the thermostat on a 2001 Dodge Caravan?

I want to change the thermostat on my 2001 Dodge Caravan but can't locate it. Can someone please help walk me through it.

    Thank you!
Where is the thermostat on a 2001 Dodge Caravan?
On most cars with slight variations the thermostat is located in a metal housing where the top hose from the radiator meets the engine. Make sure the engine is cool, drain some or all the coolent from the radiator. Look for the housing close to the radiator. It should have two bolts or nuts and studs on each side. Remove these and lift straight up. Replace the therostat and gasket. Sealing compound should not be hecessary. Usually a symptom of a bad thermostat is the engine running too cool. Too hot usually means something else is wrong.

How do you change a thermostat on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
thats pretty much all you do...just make sure you clean the area where the thermostat connects and make sure you use a new gasket or clean the old one good
How do you change a thermostat on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
i owned cherokee for 10 years %26amp; due to engine switched thermostat TWICE EVERY YEAR - crazy, but true %26amp; ran better.. reason was so ran better in cold %26amp; then hot weather. Soooooo, from all that I can tell you problems I had. First the dude who mentioned about air is smoking crackk. Also I found that gaskets are more problem than they are worth. Just use very good high temp tube of gasket gunk - yaknow the stuff you squeeze from tube and spread like frosting. Now make sure you let that stuff dry way longer than recommended, like 12- 24 hours would be good ( better safe than sorry). To help keep the coolant away from area where you are trying to seal I advise take apart first then when going to install jack up front to make coolant flow back away from thermostat. Also could just soak up with towel until area is dry. Now here is biggest problem - so very very easy to over tighten %26amp; break metal (cast aluminum) housing or under tighten %26amp; leaks. Check for torque recommendation (library or parts store if you dont know) %26amp; slowly do each bolt as close to same time as possible (i.e. one turn on one bolt then one turn on other). Whatever the torque setting is do NOT go even one pound past that. better to be a couple below than over. You can usually rent or borrow torque wrenches at parts store. I also decided to just buy extra housing for a few bucks just in case %26amp; that way always had extra. Dont forget once ready to start er up, refill coolant, start engine, run heater for few seconds %26amp; cycle it on %26amp; off, then shut off engine %26amp; check level but make sure either engine cool or checking at coolant resevoir tank (the plastic clear one). Personally I just leave radiator cap off 1st time and not let engine get hot, but only do that if you know what you are doing as not exactly safest way. ummm, little tidbits, bolts are not easy to get to, coolant is poisonous to animals, i have yet to ever overtighten belt but easy to not get tight enough which means battery wont charge good %26amp; can ruin it, make sure metal surfaces are very clean before assembly, not bad idea to test new thermostat in hot water to make sure it moves at right temp (rare to be bad, but sucks if it is), and lastly good luck
You will also need to bleed out the air that will be trapped in the cooling system or the vehicle will not work correctly..

  • Which of the hose am I supposed to unplugged to replace the thermostat of my car which is a Mitsubishi Galant ?

I have a 2002 mitsubishi galant and wanna change the thermostat so my radiator will be well regulated. There are 2 hoses, 1 on top which is short and the other one at the bottom which is longer. I can locate both but do not wanna unplug the wrong one. If you can help me figure it out. Thanks
Which of the hose am I supposed to unplugged to replace the thermostat of my car which is a Mitsubishi Galant ?
I don't know that particular car, but read on. I've had an awful lot of cars apart. The thermostat will be located where the upper hose connects to the engine block. Take the thermostat out and put it in a pot of water on the stove and boil the water. If the thermostat opens, it's good. It's a good idea to replace all your hoses and belts every few years. The soft parts of cars wear out first. If one hose goes, so will the other one, and also the hoses for the heater. Every time a hose springs a leak, all your antifreeze will leak out, so just replace them all and live happy.
Which of the hose am I supposed to unplugged to replace the thermostat of my car which is a Mitsubishi Galant ?
i've probably had more cars apart than the first guy and have never tested a thermostat. if you got the thing out.....PUT A NEW ONE IN!!!!

But yes, follow the top hose to the engine block. the thermostat should be there. if you have any doubt, seek professional help. or go semi-professional and go to autozone. surely they have someone halfway intelligent in there.

    I'm changing my thermostat on a '96 Explorer. Got a question(s)....?

So, do I really have to disconect the neg charge on the battery? Someone told me that... Second, do I really need to bleed all the coolant or can I just let some drain outta the top hose and mount, don't really see the point of draining it all? Third, what is %26quot;burping%26quot; your coolant system? Thanks to all who answer!!!
    I'm changing my thermostat on a '96 Explorer. Got a question(s)....?
First yes, disconnect the Batt... Second No you don't have to Drain it all. Save it in a Container. there will be a Drain on the radiator Similer to a Faucet. drain about a Gallon. when finished you can reuse. third it gurgles because it is water. maybe you don't have enough coolant to water ratio and your water is evaporating. that's all I Know. can I borrow your Pen?
    I'm changing my thermostat on a '96 Explorer. Got a question(s)....?
You should disconnect the battery before working on the car, that will prevent unintended sparking from your tools that could cause damage to the computer system of your engine. Most new cars don't have a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator, so you probably will have to drain all of the coolant. Be sure to catch it in a container, and keep it away from pets and children, don't forget it is poison. %26quot;Burping%26quot; your cooling system allows the air bubbles in the system to escape. When refilling the cooling system, make sure that the engine and radiator have exchanged water through the thermostat a couple of times before you put the cap back on. Also, recheck the level in a couple of days, to ensure that the engine is completely filled. Since your vehicle is 12 years old, you might consider changing your radiator hoses also.
as long as the motor is cooled down do it the way you described , only thing with the battery is a safety feature so nothing touches the back of the alternator and then just purge the air out and your done sounds good to me no you don't have to drain everything great question
disconnecting battery is standard warning...not really required....just relieve pressure on system...catch fluid in drain pan...(dangerous to children and pets)...make sure small hole on t stat is at top when installing...let engine warm up to temp...checking fluid level...i have never had to burp system...some vehicles have a %26quot;bleeder%26quot; to remove air hence %26quot;burp%26quot;.... i have ranger and explorer...
Regarding the battery disconnect...I hardly ever do it, but it is a lot cheaper to do than it is to buy any thing that was arch damaged, such as an alternator or fusible links...

Regarding the coolant capture, yes, catch it in something that you can hit the hole on.

The green stuff is very dangerous for cats and dogs.

There is some new(er) non toxic stuff on the market, but with reasonable precautions you don't have to spend extra money in order to be safe.

If you put it in a clean container, you can re-use it when everything is tight again.
It is best to disconnect the battery, but another thing to keep in mind is to remove any metal watch band or gold rings you might have.

I once grounded a battery with my watch band and carried a blister on my wrist for better than a month. Take the time and remove the ground. Learn from my mistake, I know I did!

take the old one out and put a new one in, all you need to do is locate the thermostat housing usually at the end of one of the radiator hoses on my car it is literally at the end of the radiator return hose (top hose) take the housing off pull the old one out clean the old gasket off the housing and engine replace gasket and place new thermo in its seat replace housing over it and bolt it back down. this is really one of the easiest things to do next to changing the oil. if you need a picture for about 20 bucks at your local autozone you can get a chilton manual for it that has every diagram of the car there is.

the thermostat will most likely be located near the engine base the is attached to the hose running from the top of the radiator.

if you have a book for your model car the instructions are simple to follow look under radiator and cooling systems in the manuel.

also you need to pay close attention to the direction of the remove so that you know the proper replacement direction upon application of the new unit.

Can you change the thermostat in a 97 Suburu Outback without removing the waterpump first?
follow lower rad hose to engine. remove two bolts holding thermostat housing (part hose goes onto). wiggle housing loose, coolant will pour out (make sure engine is cold) and thermostat is right there. usually falls right out with coolant. then, as they say, installation is the reverse of removal.
    SURE IF IT 2.5L

If this is the 2.5 liter engine it is located where the lower radiator hose bolts to engine not at the top of the engine manifold, spring goes towards engine.

you can test the high limit.. mine was a hotpoint but then again ge makes about all of them. my high limit was on the back wall inside.. raised up the top and you can see it back there. round with 2 screw holding it and 2 wires.. test it with a cotinuity(sp) tester.. should hear the beep.. no heat can be bad elements also. you can pretty much look at them and see if you have a bad one. i doubt its the t-stat or controller
This is a very good and expensive dryer---also fire prone if you wire the wrong things together. Call a Maytag man! please.
You would also want to check the door switch, alot of times that can be the coulpret, But the thermal fuse is along the side of the element box that is located on the top left ubder the top of this machine. I beleive there may be a couple of snap clips under the lid in the front that you can release with a putty knife to raise the lid and get to the parts you will need to test.

  • How can i change a thermostat on a 1995 Chevy Lumina?

also where is the thermostat located on a 3.1 Liter engine
How can i change a thermostat on a 1995 Chevy Lumina?
That one is kind of a bear as thermostats go.

It's located in the thermostat housing which is on the back of the lower intake manifold (LH side of engine bay) directly below the throttle body.

Some technicians find it easier to remove the throttle body from the car for better access to the thermostat housing bolts but it's not completely necessary.

There are 2 bolts holding the housing to the manifold The top one is fairly easy but you can barely see the bottom one. Luckily GM was smart enough to slot the hole in the housing for the bottom bolt so you don't have to take it all the way out. Just back it out 3 or 4 turns and the housing will slide up and off the bolt.

    Best of Luck!
How can i change a thermostat on a 1995 Chevy Lumina?
You may be better off to take this to a small shop for this.

If it has the aluminum intake like a lot of cars, likely you will snap the bolts off getting them out. Then, you would need to drill out the broken bolt part and use a tap and then a threadsert to fix it, before you could drive it anywhere.
You're probably better off letting a professional change it. Besides, do you have symptons of a problem? Are you one of those people that have a problem with their car, bring it in for a %26quot;tune up%26quot;, so you get new plugs and wires, then call back later bitching your problem wasn't solved... the one that you didn't mention to begin with???

How do you change a thermostat on a Chevy Monte Carlo 3.8 liter v-6?

Where is the thermostat housing located?
How do you change a thermostat on a Chevy Monte Carlo 3.8 liter v-6?
I own a shop, and have owned a few 3.8 V-6 engines. Good engine! Follow the top radiator hose from the radiator to the engine. Remove the hose from the engine, this will be the thermostat housing that you remove the hose from. Two bolts hold this housing in place. You must remove these bolts, and may have to remove the alternator tensioner bracket in order to get to one of the bolts. After the housing is removed, remove the old thermostat, and scrape all the old gasket you can get off the intake and the housing. Clean out the recessed area where the thermostat goes to make sure the new thermostat will sit below the mounting area. Once you have it all ready to go back together, use a spared amount of RTV on the thermostat gasket, and the housing. This is to place the gasket in position, and to hold it there during installation. Once the RTV has dried, and the gasket has stuck in place, you are ready to install the thermostat. Put the bolts through the housing before the RTV has a chance to dry, and the bolts will hold it in place until it dries. On the thermostat or the box it came it, will be a picture or an arrow that shows the correct direction it is to be installed. This is important to the operation of the thermostat. Place the thermostat in the intake, and make sure it sits below the surface down in the slot. You can put just a tiny bit of RTV to keep it down if you wish, but let it dry before you attach the housing. Clean the mounting bolts with a wire brush, and if one or both of the bolts go through the intake, you will have to use a thread sealer (to keep it from leaking) on the bolts. Be careful when you install the bolts to not move the housing back and forth on the intake, as this sometimes will get the thermostat out of position. Tighten the bolts down evenly with your fingers, and then use a socket, extension, and a ratchet to just barely tighten the bolts. It is very important these bolts are tightened evenly, and that the thermostat doesn't get moved when doing this. If the thermostat gets out of position, and you tighten the bolts down, the housing will leak, and when you tighten it down more to stop the leaking, it will break the housing because it is pulling down at an angle. Before you start the job, drain about a gollon of coolant from the radiator drain plug on the drivers side, facing the engine. This plug is hard to get to, and should turn counter clockwise to loosen it, but do keep in mind that some of them do work the other way, so be careful to not break it. Once you have the housing back down, the top radiator hose back on %26amp; tight, you can put the coolant back into the radiator. You may not can get it all back in until the engine has been ran long enough for the top radiatior hose to be hot. This indicates the thermostat is open, and you should be able to get the rest into the radiator, and the cap back on.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!
How do you change a thermostat on a Chevy Monte Carlo 3.8 liter v-6?
Simply take your VIN (serial number) to any GM dealer's parts department and ask them for a print out of the area in question. They will provide you with a diagram from their automated parts catalog which will show you what you need. It's not a difficult as some would have you believe.

How long will it take an electrician to change the thermostat?

......on a newly installed combi boiler? And will they have to go in your bedroom to change it?
How long will it take an electrician to change the thermostat?
10 - 15 minutes under most circumstances, unless they need to run new wires to the spot of the thermostat.
How long will it take an electrician to change the thermostat?
not long and its very easy to do yourself
    15 min
That would really depend on if the boiler was in your bedroom. If it was and you don't let them in it will take ages.
About 20 minutes to half an hour. And no they don't need to go into your bedroom. That would be unprofessional, unless you wanted the thermostat installed there.
    15 minutes
15 minutes to change it.Why would they go in your bedroom?
depends.. as it's a tricky one.. e.g. what type of electrics? as for boilers you have to be corgi registered to work on some things. if it's directly involving the boiler.

as for the bedroom.. hhmm is there anything in there, wiring or controls for it or anything that relates to that.

always good to go up there with them, just check things incase they are light fingered.
if that is where it is at yes and around 15 minutes to a hour depends if they have another one with them or not.
    20 minutes
if you look at the thermostat and get the name go to a plum centre and get one less than 1 min if it is the same tipe you can phone the electrician and tell him you have one redy

how do you know it is the stat they are prity reliable

    all the best dai
20 minutes and the only reason they would need to go into the bedroom is if you needed your thermostat checked.

My guys tell me this happens more than you'd believe!
15 minutes, minimum call out fee.

he might just go around other rooms to check the rads are heating up, or he may be wasting time.

Assuming the system worked before ( apart from the stat ) he jsut needs to check the rad in the room where the stat is works, thats it.
Great answer Steve in NC!! LMAO!!

How do you change a thermostat in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix?

I haven't looked under the hood of my step daughters car but her boyfriend couldn't get to it. Her boss tried and couldn't get to it. Anyone have any suggestions for when I take a look? Apparently it's in a location that you can't get to which I find hard to believe. It has to be a way to get to it to change it. What are they doing wrong and what do I do right?
How do you change a thermostat in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix?
    I feel your pain.

Follow the upper hose. you should see the wires from the temp sensor protruding from the thermostat housing.

The housing is usually mounted with two bolts.

It is a tight squeeze. remove the mass air hoses if needed for maneuvering. Mine I had to remove a heat deflector of the exhaust manifold for better access.

    Drain coolant

Remove the upper hose at the thermostat housing.

The bolt size should be a metric 13mm.

I bought a set of box wrenches with an elbow and ratchet on the end. Expensive but worth it. They are cheap at Lowe's. remember the elbow is important.

I had only 2 degrees movement and took maybe 10min for removal but it was worth not having to remove more compo nets for maneuvering.

Remove old thermostat and gasket. install new one. use appropriate RTV sealant on the housing matting surfaces. tighten

Put everything back in place. pour in coolant. and your done.

I figured out the best way. I told her to take it to the repair shop, have them change it and I'd pay for it. lol

well their is only 2 spots it could be all you can do is follow the hoses and you will find it and yes their is a way to do it you should be able to get to it from the top
i own a repair shop, and all you need to do is follow the top radiator hose down to the engine,,some of these though,, are in under the air plenum,,i believe that's why there a little hard to get off,you might have to remove that before you can get it out,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s..,,have a nice x-mas.
Remove top radiator hose Take off the goose neck. Theres the thermoustate, pull it out, slip in new one, bolt gasket and gooseneck back on.Then replace top radiator hose.
You need a slimline 13mm racheting box end wrench, its a pain and takes a bit of skill but thats all you need. its under the throttle body, you don't have to take anything off except the air duct. make sure the cars cold and just dig down in there with the wrench usually its easiest to reach around the back of the motor, by the brake booster, get the top bolt all the way out and loosen the bottom one, the hole is slotted but you have to get it out almost all the way out to clear the thermostat itself, good luck
You must have the 3.1 Liter engine in this vehicle, upper radiator hose connects to this aluminum neck the goes to LR corner of engine. You are going to have to take off the throttle body, where the throttle cables are connected and after you remove this you can see 1 of the bolts from the top, just loosen the top bolt a couple of turns with a open ended wrench it notched out and doesn't have to be taken out all the way. the bottom one is kind of hard but you can just fit a socket with a extention under the exhause pipe to remove this bolt, this one has to come all the way out. then this aluminum radiator neck should slide out of there. Should be 2-- 13mm bolts holding this on.

How do you change the thermostat in a 97 Dodge Intrepid?

The car went from cold to overheating in two blocks. When the heater is blowing hot air, the car is fine, but sometimes the heat stops blowing and cold air starts coming out, causing the car to overheat. I know it needs changed, but can't figure out how to do it.
How do you change the thermostat in a 97 Dodge Intrepid?
Shaggy's on the right track. You have an air pocket, and/or you're low on anti-freeze. That's the only way you could be overheating within 2 blocks. Even if the thermostat were welded shut it wouldn't do that. The lack of heat from the heater is another symptom that supports this.

    That's not to say that your thermostat isn't ruined by now. Try this. After you replace the thermostat, which is located under the thermostat housing here;

How do you change the thermostat in a 97 Dodge Intrepid?
Remove the hose connection where the upper hose meets the engine block. The thermostat is located there and will just lift out for replacement.
could also be the heater core
the cooling system in this type of car needs to be bled out, sounds like you are already having issues with the system having air pockets in it. so when you go and buy your stat the person at the parts counter will have the proper procedure to bleed the system, you didn't give the reasons for this issue but if its just the stat if you don't bleed the system you will have the same issues that you are dealing with now

How do you change the thermostat in a 1997 mercury sable?
OK, first, you have to be kidding. If you have no knowledge or tools, DON'T try. I'm sure someone in your %26quot;circle%26quot; of friends can do it for you. If not, take it to a shop and have it done properly (won't cost much.)
How do you change the thermostat in a 1997 mercury sable?
Follow the top radiator hose to the engine block, it ends at the thermostat housing. Mine is a 5/8 ths bolt on my 95. You will also need a screwdriver for the hose clamp, possibly a scraper to scrape off the old gasket if there is one, the new thermostat, gasket and new coolant. I would replace the upper hose while I was at it.

How do I change the thermostat in an 1999 Pontiac Grand Am?
it should be fairly easy. follow the radiator hose the one on the top. once you found were it connects to the engine, there will be to bolts. undo those and there is your thermostat. you shouldn't need any special tools. make sure you use a new gasket and put the thermostat in there strait. be careful when putting the bolts back in the holes. make sure they thread easy so you don't cross thread. that could be a big problem. one more thing you need to do as soon as you take it apart is clean all the previous gasket off and make sure you are working with a flat surface. before you go and drive somewhere make sure the fluid levels are correct and no leaks.

you buy a haynes or chiltons, the thermostat, and gasket if applicable, go home look up coolant system, find the section on the thermostat and follow the directions its that easy complete with diagrams and torque specs not that you will actually use a torque wrench.

if its a 3.4 liter you have to take throttle body off to get to the lower bolt on the thermostat housing the lower bolt doesn't have to come all the way out but most of the way by the way follow the upper hose

Don't complain, you have a cool running car, the only thing I can think of is the fan if electric is kicking on at the wrong temperature and keeping it too cool.

Kia sedona 2003 overheating, Any ideas, i've changed thermostat and coolant temperature sensor, fan is workin?
Bottom hose obstruction, or pump impeller or bearing, could be the cause of failing to cool. Get a trouble shooting guide and follow the steps start with cooling system flush and pressure test. Run the engine with pressure gauge hooked up, look for pressure swings to indicate trouble according to chart. A soft hose can suck shut under load, or a large airlock can cause temp fluctuations. Head gaskets also can cause cooling problems.
Kia sedona 2003 overheating, Any ideas, i've changed thermostat and coolant temperature sensor, fan is workin?
Your cooling system might be plugged. Try doing a full radiator flush and fill. It's a little time consuming, but well worth it.
You need to check the New Thermostat for a Bleeding HOLE--

The Thermostat will completly close off the water supply..you can drill a very tiny hole in the thermostat to allow water to %26quot;squirt%26quot; thru..and I mean really tiny--like thin spagetti..or regular spagetti..TINY..its just a bleeder..

    ===

Next is too operate the car...COLD..with the radiator Cap---removed..

Start the engine and time the water---as it moves into the radiator..

You should see water just start moving..

This should improve with a bleeder hole..

    ===

That's it..if the water stays in Radiator...and the Cylinder Head..gets HOT--and immeadiatly water moves into the radiator..that's the thermostat operating..

    ===

Be careful of the boiling water..Shut the Motor Down..and allow to cool once more before replacing the Radiator Cap..

    ===

If there is no leaking fluid..the cooling system is pressurized..

You may want to try flushing the cooling system w/plain water..

Adding fresh Coolant..and see how that works.

Go buy a manual for your car, it will give very detailed instructions and pictures on chagning your thermostat.

That said, it should be easy to find, it's one of the large black tubes running from your radiator to the engine, the thermostat is under the housing that the hose plugs into.
A $20 manual would be a good idea. Yet you might find pics in a forum if your lucky. Generally speaking you should find the thermostat on the housing just beyond the lower radiator hose. Don't forget the gasket and sealer.

Do i need to empty my antifreeze when i change my thermostat gasket?
make sure the upper hose is empty so it doesn't spill everywhere,
Do i need to empty my antifreeze when i change my thermostat gasket?
Drain it just enough so that the upper hose is empty. That way you won't have antifreeze gush out everywhere.
not necessary to empty just fill back any you lose in the process
No you don't need to empty the coolant , you'll loose a bit when you take it off and be sure to clean the surfaces well with a paint scraper or fine sandpaper before putting the new gasket in. Be also sure to take a small fine clean cloth and put it the hole so nothing can fall in it and what I recommend is using a high temperature gasket maker bec that will limit or avoid any possible further leaks. Also check the rad hoses and if old soft or cracked replace them and always replace the old hose clamps too when changing the thermostat etc.

Just don't forget to test the anti-freeze mixture with a anti-freeze tester , plus if the coolant hasn't been changed in awhile it's a good idea to change it too.

Hope that helps and best of luck.
Depends on the age of your antifreeze and the type. I believe you have the red or orange type in your vehicle. If it is aging, may be to your advantage to change out to restore additive levels.

Newer antifreeze would probably be OK to reuse. Putting a tube on the radiator petcock makes hitting a bucket or bottle easier and avoids washing junk off the car into the antifreeze.

  • Why does thermostat go bad on a 98 civic ex? i'm on the third in 6 months.?

fan motor kicks in at the right time. the first time i changed thermostat it did look like it was the original, but after that i changed again cuz temp. would rise during idle. should i get therm. from dealer?
Why does thermostat go bad on a 98 civic ex? i'm on the third in 6 months.?
flush the system out...check if your water pump is leaking any water or making any noises...if it does then its bad....also check your radiator if its cracked or plugged up and if there are alot of the blades of the radiator bent or jamed with debri....also did you make sure you got all the air out of the system...air in the system will cause it to heat up....
Why does thermostat go bad on a 98 civic ex? i'm on the third in 6 months.?
Maybe you have a build up of crud in your water system. You should flush it before you replace the thermostat next time.
doesnt sound like your thermostat. it sounds like a blown head gasket
    Hi,

Your engine temp. is supposed to go up to about 190 degrees during idle, because the engine is running.

Here's how to check if your thermostat is good.

    #1. take out thermostat.

#2 Put it into a pot of water on your stove.

#3 Turn on the flame, stick a meat thermometer in the water.

#4 When the water temp. reaches about 185 to 195 degrees,

watch the thermostat-it should begin to open.

#5 if it doesn't open it has a worn out spring and is no good.

    Good Luck
It's probably your water pump. I had that same problem. 3 thermostats is way to many.
your radiator is no good, pluged up and not flowing enough at idle, very common problem
The way you describe this sounds like a head gasket problem. You need to take this to someone who has the tools to check carbon monoxide (CO) in the cooling system. All this tool is is a chemical that changes color when CO is detected and is specifically designed for measuring levels of CO in the cooling system.

    Good Luck

How can I get my downstairs gas furnace to kick in quicker when I increase degrees on the thermostat?

When I wake up in the morning the temperature in the house may show 69 degrees on the thermostat. I increase the thermostat to 74 degrees to get some heat. It never comes on. I switch the fan from auto to on and then back and it may come on. I take the door off the furnace, put it back, I hear a click, then it kicks in. The colder it gets the longer it takes to come on, sometimes as long as 15 minutes. No problem upstairs, change the thermostat the heat comes on instantly. My house has high ceilings.
How can I get my downstairs gas furnace to kick in quicker when I increase degrees on the thermostat?
    adjust the anticipator.
How can I get my downstairs gas furnace to kick in quicker when I increase degrees on the thermostat?
check the location of your thermostat if it located in a warm spot allready it may need to be moved or it is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced
the blower shouldn't come on until the furnace heats up other wise it will be blowing cold air, so there should be a delay between raising the temperature and the blower coming on however if the furnace is warmed up and the blower is not on then the limit switch might need adjusted or replaced.
I would suggest getting a programmable digital thermostat to put on your system; that way, you can program the thermostat to turn your system on just before you usually get up. Most gas-fired systems have to warm up before coming on, so that's probably the delay you're experiencing; it has to heat the air that's already in the system before the blower comes on, or you would have COLD air coming out of the vents. Your upstairs is almost certainly warmer than your downstairs most of the time, so that may account for the differences. If you still think there's a problem, then certainly it would be a good idea to have the system checked by a reputable repair service.
Your relay maybe sticking have it replaced

Buy either a Chilton or a Haynes repair book for your vehicle and it tells how to do it.

    1. Raise the hood.

    2. Look at your engine.

    3. Underneath the intake manifold there is a triangular piece of metal that has 3 bolts that connects it to the other piece of metal and it has a black hose coming out of it.

    4. Remove the hose and tuck it out of the way before you do anything.

    5. Take the 3 bolts out of this triangular piece of metal.

    6. When you remove this piece the thermostat should just fall right out of the whole that was behind the triangular piece of metal.

    7. Insert the new thermostat where the old one was.

    8. Hold the triangular piece with one hand while starting the first bolt with your hand.

    9. Once the first bolt is started start the other 2 bolts.

    10. Now tighten all the bolts.

    11. Put the hose back on.

    12. Crank the vehicle to make sure everthing is running ok.

    It is very simple job!!
get a book about your car at the auto part store and it will tell you step by step good luck
if you r gona b working on your car get a shop manual from advance/autozone/o'reilly parts store...u will learn a lot abt ur car...even if u don't do the work urself u can keep the mechanic honest...
See if Haynes or Chilton has any info online. Both are reputable sources for car repair info. Also, your local library might have these in stock.
just follow the top hose line from your radiator to your engine. it will lead you to the thermostat housing.. undo the hose from the housing and then take the 3 boltz out of the housing unit. and lift it off. inside you will find your thermostat.

To check to see if it is working properly or not before replacing it. you can stick in in a pan of boiling water and see if it opens like it should. if it doesnt then replace. if it opens. then that is not your problem. Also make sure that you are using the right kiind of antifreeze. some cars take a different type and if you use the regular antifreeze that is green, you can ruin your engine. That too will cause your overheating problems if you use the wrongkind. then you will have to burp it and all kinds of fun stuff to fix it. check your owners manual or it should tell ya on the radiator.

If you find that it is your thermostat. replace it where the other one was at in the same direction. and then you have to have some sealant that you put around the housing along with the gasket that comes with it. make sure that you have a real tight seal when you put the housing back on the motor and then tighten down the housing and then put back on the radioator hose and tighten. That simple. Good luck!

And just because I am female, don't mean I dont know how to do mechanics. I repaired my 78 chevy truck myself for 5 years. I miss my truck
    1. Thoroughly clean the thermostat housing.

    2. Remove the bolts holding the top cover.

    3. Remove the old thermostat.

    4. Clean the housing of any residual gasket pieces or sealant.

    5. Replace the new thermostat. Use the correct gasket and approved sealing compound.

    6. Replace and tighten the bolts.

    7. Start engine and check for leaks.

    Good luck

    Hi

As a general rule, if you follow the top hose from the radiator you will find the thermostat housing at the other end. It will be dome shaped and held down by three bolts.

Before you do anything, turn the heater control FULLY ONTO HOT, to minimise the chance of an airlock, remembering that if it is electrically controlled, you may need to switch on the ignition to power the heater control, and then switch it back off after the adjustment.

Before you undo the bolts, pull the bottom hose from the radiator and drain the cooling system down by about half in order that the level falls lower than the thermostat, then refit the bottom hose.

Remove the three bolts, remove the old thermostat, clean the mating surfaces, fit the new thermostat with the supplied new seal, and refit the thermostat housing with a new gasket.

Next you must top up the cooling system again with a mixture of antifreeze and water (preferably de-ionised water) as follows:-

Top up the coolant to the max level, and with the coolant cap still removed, run the engine until the fan comes on.

Whilst the engine is running, keep a close eye on the coolant level as it may go down slightly, if so, top it back up. Look for leaks around the thermostat housing and hose, and around the radiator bottom hose.

Once the cooling fan has been on once or twice, switch off the engine and replace the coolant cap.

    Job done!

    Very best regards

Need help changing a thermostat on 94 gram dam v6 3.1?
All GM thermos are underneath the upper rad hose that connects to the left side of the rad, left being when you sit in the drivers seat. Usually it is only a matter of removing the hose and two bolts to pop a new one in. However if this is the motor I'm thinking about, the housing is behind the exhaust pipe that crosses over from the front one to the back one. These are hard to change. If you have swivel sockets you can still get it out, but these are tough. Bolts have a tendency of dropping down somewhere and becoming lost. If it is this one and you're a rookie, take it to a mech and let him fight with it.

question 4 u... what the @#$@ is a gram dam?
Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine and you'll run into the thermostat housing, remove the 2 bolts holding that down and theres your thermostat
good luck in changing it. you cant. have to take it to a machanic
Follow your upper radiator hose to the engine - it is located right under it. Don't forget after you have changed the thermostat to leave the radiator cap off - bring your engine up to operating temperature - turn on your heater - add more anti freeze as needed until you have all the air out of the system. good luck

My condo always feels colder than thermostat says it is. Time to change the thermostat?

I live on the top floor of a 3-story condo and my (programmable) thermostat on average has been reading in the high 60's, low 70's, yet the rooms always feel cooler than the temperature readout. My furnace is brand new but I kept the thermostat that came with the place. The furnace will kick on if I raise the thermostat, but if I keep to a reasonable schedule programmed into the panel, the furnace will never cycle on.

No. Buy a room thermometer and see how the results compare to the thermostat.

Top floor condo's have heat seep up from the unit downstairs and it could be just enough to keep the room warm so the thermostat doesn't call for heat. Buy a movable thermostat and check the readings. Sometimes it will also not come on if it's only one degree off from the setting. Some thermostats have a variance setting so you can adjust how soon it will kick on if the temp drops 2 or more degrees.

  • 2003 dodge intrepid 2.7 how to change thermostat bleeder valve housing?

Does anybody know? I know quiet a bit about cars but have never ran in to this! It's on the front top of the engine. The top radiator hose runs into it.

I believe you're talking about the same housing were the thermostat sits in , those aren't hard to replace , just un-clamp the hose going to it , unbolt the housing , then clean the surface on the engine that the housing connects to , clean the housing and make sure that both surfaces are fully dry ,clean the housing were the house clamps onto it , replace the clamp with a new hose clamp when reattaching the hose ,then use a silicone high temperature gasket maker , follow its instructions , make you you tighten up the two bolts enough to force the gasket silicone out some around the edges.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way you might be able to find that part at a big U pick auto wreckers for quite cheap like 10 to 20 bucks or so and I'am sure that several different models and years of Dodges use the exact same part.

I take it yours is leaking around the bleeder.it is quite common. at one time you could remove the 4 mounting bolts on top and 2 screws in the front and pull it out the transfer tube.the new ones have a long tube and the upper intake manifold has to come off to change it.
