Ford orion thermostat change?

Hi, Ihave a Ford orion with a 1600 CVH engine, And i need to change the thermostat. How hard is it and how do i do it? Thanks.
Ford orion thermostat change?
piece of cake,2 or three bolts should be undone from the thermo housing which should be located on the top of the engine block, undo the rad pipe first, then take out the bolts,if the housing does not come away then gently prise using a medium screwdriver.once the housing is off ,take out the old stat and replace with new on,make sure it is the Right way round as you will not have any cooling if it is closed all the time, then once you have replaced the part .replace the housing using a liquid sealer .and sorted

you may need to drain the radiator and coolant expansion tank first, otherwise you might find yourself and the engine having a anti-freeze/coolant shower ,it is recommended as good practice to drain then flush the entire cooling system

and refill with new coolant and water after the thermostat has been refitted ,also make sure you get the gasket with the thermostat, they have a habit of going missing from the box

as i have made the mistake of not checking and getting home to find its not there in the box, some are cardboard or rubber or both.

ps:when i say drain and flush the entire cooling system i mean a forward flush with the radiator in the car

that is not including a reverse flush on the radiator

to do this you normally need to remove the radiator from the car.[its done to remove rust blockages and suchlike]

  • How do I change the thermostat on a 2003 chevy impala 3.4 v6? Cant remove the lower bolt on housing, no room..

I removed the airbox, but theres no way I can get the lower bolt out of the thermostat housing. Anyone have a step by step instruction on how they did this?

Usually you can get at it once you get the guard off the exhaust manifold. They are wrapped around the manifold to keep down the heat. I think they are 10mm bolts with a little bending and wiggling you can get the guard off . Then you should be able to get at the bottom bolt but you will probably have to use quarter inch drive swivel socket I believe its a 13mm.

If they got it on, then they can get it off... if you haven't already, try taking the hose off. Or ask a Chevy shop mechanic if they use a special tool... You'd be suprized how many wrenches I've had to cut and weld to reach difficult spots.
there is always a way. is there something else you have to remove to get at it? check the local Chilton's or Hayes Manuel at the library and see if they have any tips. sometimes you have to remove lots to just do something simple

How do I know when to change the thermostat or know when it isn't working??

I flushed my radiator about three times until water was clear and then refilled with half and half, coolant/distilled water. I did this because it hadn't been done since I bought the truck ('95 Ford Ranger, 107K miles) from a neighbor two years before, plus the fact that the truck's coolant temp gauge needle was going past the middle mark but not all the way into %26quot;H.%26quot; Afterwards, it was a little better, but it still happened once in a while for long trips on the highway. Just changed the air filter w/ a K%26amp;N filter and strangely things seemed to improve, but the needle still moves a little past the middle. I don't know what else to do. So, I'm wondering about the thermostat...

If the engine takes too long to heat up then it probably is a bad thermostat. Watch the temp Gage and see if the temperature is in the proper range when the temperature gets up to the proper operating temp then the thermostat will open up letting the water circulate through the engine. You can tell when this happens as you may be able to hear the thermostat click and followed by a sudden and temporary drop in temperature as the cooler water from the radiator starts going through the engine and the warmer water from the engine goes to the radiator to be cooled by the fan also you may sense a sudden and temporary drop in engine speed when the fan kicks in .
How do I know when to change the thermostat or know when it isn't working??
thermostats go out often. they are easy enough to change and cheap. is your fan working? with it warming up your fan could have shorted out a while ago and it's just now affecting you temp gage. if it is okay. just change the thermostat. if that doesn't work pay for the diagnostic
No idea how your gage is calibrated, but, most of the time a %26quot;stat%26quot; will stick open, not shut. That will cause too low of a temp and no heat from the heater. Too hot (in or real close to)the red and that is more apt to be from some other cause, fan, air flow etc.
When your vehicle starts to over heat, check thermostart and when it starts to operate below normal temperatures
First off what engine do you have? the thermostat should be changed every 2 years. You should have the cooling system pressure checked for leaks.

I have a 99 ford taurus no heat changed thermostat, got coolant flush still no heat blowing cold air help?

If you have good coolant flow threw the heater core .Then check to make Shir the blend door is working .The actuator brakes on Taurus all the time if the blend door doesn't open you will not get heat.It is under the dash on the heater box.

sounds like the valve to the heater core is not opening.

I had the same issue with a '98 Jeep Cherokee and couldn't figure out what was going on.

It turned out that the temperature control knob had disconnected from the control unit.

Might help, might not. Good luck.
should like the heater core is bad my sister has a 1999 Ford Taurus it's a good car
This problem could be classified in TWO categories. Electrical system, OR cooling system. If it's equipped with the 3.0L OHV Vulcan V6, NOT the 3.0L DOHC Duratec 24 valve V6, those engines are NOTORIOUS for having the %26quot;brown%26quot; coolant problem. Casting material was left inside the engine blocks of those particular engines when they were manufactured new. Consequently, the cooling systems in those cars with that particular engine would be contaminated with rust. The ONLY way to fix this problem would be to perform SEVERAL thorough flushes of the ENTIRE cooling system, which includes back flushing the heater core, the radiator, and ESPECIALLY the engine block!!! It wouldn't hurt to replace the thermostat as well, while you're %26quot;in there%26quot;, but you appear to have had that done already. OR, you could have a control issue. To check this. Turn your climate control fan on to medium speed, and cycle the temperature control from FULL COLD, to FULL HOT. See if you hear a change in air flow. If so, the problem is in the cooling system. If not, the temperature blend door actuator has failed, causing the air not to circulate through the heater core. The only way to repair this, would require instrument panel removal for access the failed component(s). Hope this helps

Where is the thermostat on a Northstar engine?

And is it very hard to get to? I`ve changed many thermostats on different makes, but never on a Cadillac with the Northstar engine. Thanx in advance for your help. :)
Where is the thermostat on a Northstar engine?
It is located in the water pump cover on the driver side of engine at the lower radiator hose, you need to pull the air box to gain access.

    How do I change a thermostat in a 2002 chevy silverado 2500hd?

Little more info (engine size gas /diesel) Drain the anti-freeze out of the radiator. There is a plastic twist plug at the bottom left of the radiator that allows the fluid to drain out there. There might be a rubber hose that lets the fluid pass down through the lower fan shroud. When that has stopped draining, close the drain plug and move the bucket away from the work area. At the top of the radiator, follow the upper radiator hose back to where it makes contact with the intake manifold. There is a hose clamp on the water inlet neck, loosen the clamp and remove the radiator hose. The thermostat is under the water inlet neck. It has two bolts that hold it to the manifold. The bolts may have Loc-tight applied to them from the factory so you might need a little heat to loosen them. (electric paint stripper) The gasket may or may not come off in one piece, if it doesn't ,scrape it off but don't let anything fall into the opening. Almost done, clean off and make sure the surface where the inlet neck sits is dry.Place the new thermostat (spring pointing down) in the opening, apply a small amount of gasket sealer to both sides of the new gasket. Place the gasket over the opening matching the hole for the bolts. Place the water inlet neck over the thermostat but make sure you have both bolts in the holes of the neck while you place it over the gasket, this will help keep the gasket in line with the neck as you lower it on to the manifold. Tighten down the bolts evenly till their snug and the torque them down to 30 or 40 foot pounds (1/2 to 3/4 of a turn) . Re-fit the radiator hose over the water inlet, secure the clamp and return the anti-free to the radiator. You might not be able to add it in through the radiator cap so it as to be poured in by way of the boil over resivior. Add as much as you can the the resivior then start your engine. Add the anti-freeze as needed till the %26quot;COLD%26quot; mark has been reached. Run your engine till normal operating tempature has been reached and then check for leaks. Allow the engine to cool off again and add more anti-freeze till the %26quot;COLD%26quot; mark is reached. Its been a while since I've done that to a GM product but I bet it hasn't change much since my 90 Astro van.

    Good Luck...

  • Have a '86 coup deville, changed thermostat and heater started workin then quit, works only now and then?

new thermo worked for a little, then stoped. once in awhile it will blast a little heat and then go back to super cold. heater core is still good, wondering what next step i should take in resolving this problem?
