How do I change a thermostat on a rover25?
petrol or diesel?
Assuming petrol, the thermostat is behind the engine under the inlet manifold, and a complete pain to get at.
Drain the coolant by disconnecting the bottom hose from the radiator. make sure the engine is cold before you do this. then remove the inlet manifold from the cylinder head, you can usually leave the fuel lines in place and just move the manifold to one side, but be carefull not to strain the hoses and wiring.
Then you will be able to see the coolant pipe running along the rear of the engine. its bolted to the block, this will need removing, then undo the 3 bolts holding the thermostat housing together, the thermostat can then be removed. Pay attention to the thermostats orientation, it won't work the wrong way around.
In true haynes manual style, reassembly is the reverse of removal. make sure you replace all the seals, you don't want coolant leaks on these engines, and torque settings are very important on all bolts. use a small dab of thread locker to be sure.
If you are doing this yourself, get a haynes manual. they are worth it.
