How do I change the thermostat on a 1998 Cadillac Catera?

I recently changed the lower radiator hose on my catera after I discovered a hole in it and it was forcing water out draining the radiator every time I drove and the car was still heating up, yet the radiator was full of the specified coolant (dexcool) and properly mixed. I asked a question about it here and an overwhelming amount of people told me that changing the thermostat would do the trick. How would I do this?

follow the hose on the top of the radiator and at the end of it where it connects to the motor will be a clamp,loosen this clamp and pull of the hose, this will reveal nozzel that is bolted to the motor with 2 bolts, remove these 2 bolts and pull of this nozzel,this will expose the thermostat, just lift it out and you will need to scape off any gasket material from the opening on the motor and the enderside of the nozzel,install the new thermostat and new gasket with black permatex on bothsides(1/4 in.bead.)and put the nozzel back on the motor then the hose and tighten clamp, wait 30 minutes before starting car so the permatex can set up and you should be good to go.

If the hot water heater is more than four or five years old, you should start thinking about getting a new one. They lose their efficiency after a while and raise your utility bill.

Most of the time the thermostat does not go bad. The thermocouple is usually the problem.. This is the small bulb that goes into the burner. If you want to replace it it is not expensive. You must be careful to position it in the flame the same position that it was in. Most of the time when you buy one there will be instructions on the package it comes in. it takes a very small wrench to perform this task.

If the thermostat is gone its no good trying to take it out because its disappeared. If the bar is slightly bent find a pub that is straighter.
I have a feeling that you are in over your head. How do you know that the thermostat is defective? Please go to http://appliancequickfix.com/ and find out how easy it is.
If you can, call in a professional. Or go to Lowes or some other hardware store where their employees are very knowledgeable. Especially the older ones that don't mind spending a few minutes to share their wisdom. Good Luck
The thermostat isn't in the hot water tank. There are so many different tanks I am not sure we can help you here. The elements are inside the tank. You usually have to purchase a special wrench to remove the elements. I can't tell if you are using a cheaply made tool, the wrong tool, or removing the wrong part. Do a search for electric water heater troubleshooting, and water heater element wrench.

I have heat when it is in park and running but as soon as I drive a few miles, no heat. Mechanic friend said try changing the thermostat as the radiator is intact with no leaks. Want to do it myself. Anyone ever done this before?

I have changed the complete cooling system in my Wrangler and did it in about 4 hours. The thermostat is a simple job. Make sure the engine is cool and you will have to drain the collant about half way. If you want to do it right just drain all of the coolant and replace it with 1 gallon of new coolant and the rest water. Your thermostat is usually held in by no more than 2-3 bolts. Make certain to remove all of the old gasket material before installing the new thermostat and gasket or you will have more trouble. Go to your local auto parts store and purchase a Chilton manual or something comperable for your car. It is an easy afternoon job even for a nubie

It's easy, buy the thermostat, then follow the big top radiator hose down to the engine, where the hose connects in the housing that holds the thermosat, there should be 2 bolts holding it on, remove the bolts and pry the cover off, you will need a new thermostat gasket as well. Replace the thermostat, gaske and cover, bolt it back up and your done. Check your collant level, you will probaly loose some coolant changing the thermostat.

Yeah dude buy a repair manual, it will save you a lot of time and trouble. For the time being, to replace the thermostat on a chevy small-block (I am assuming yours is a 5.7, but they are all the same) you will need to locate a large hose coming out of the top of the radiator and curving towards the center of the engine (called the upper radiator hose). It ends at about the middle of the front part of the intake manifold. Remove the hose at the engine (manifold) end. The fitting that you just removed the hose from is called the thermostat housing. There are two bolts holding it down. One of them will have a stud on the opposite end with a nut on it. Remove the nut and the wires underneath it (they are actually ground wires for the alternator, etc.) and then remove the bolts. The housing should then come off (it may be stuck so you may have to pull hard to get it off). Underneath the housing is the thermostat (which may also be stuck and can be removed with pliers because it does not have to be saved). There might be some fragments of the old gasket stuck on to the bottom of the thermostat housing or on the intake manifold where the housing bolts on. This should be removed with a putty knife. Replace the thermostat and put on the new gasket and reassemble everything.

The thermostat housing is visible from the top of the engine. If I had the right fricken socket for the nuts i'd do it myself and be done in about 10 minutes. I am going to get a pro to do it though. What do you all think the charge would be? I'm getting an OEM thermostat and gasket from Advanced Auto Parts.

You don't need a pro to do change a thermostat. It's like hiring a pro to change a light bulb.



Buy or borrow the right socket, put a drain pan underneath, open the thermostat housing, and replace the old. A new thermostat is only $15, a shop would charge you $60 or more to have it done.

There is no possible way I can get to the bolts without disassembling something else. Can someone help me who has alread done this before?

Do a lot of search on the internet I did for my car and finally found pictures and even step by step instructions. If you Research it enough you should be able to do it. The thermostat is located where the upper radiator hose is connected to the engine block. Just take your time You could also look it up at auto zone and advance auto parts they have some helpful info.

Have you tried checking your radiator? Make sure there is the proper amount of water and coolant. Also, check your oil. Make sure all your fluids are at their proper levels.

how does the radiator look? is it clean or does it have a ton of dirt clogging the fins on the radiatior? also check your waterpump
the radiator might be clogged... after you drive it for a couple days and if the fluid is a darker color then your radiator is dirty,,



another one could be that your fan might be malfunctioning..



or their might be a glitch on the computer that tells the thermostat to open and close .. which wont give the engine enough water that it needs...



plust the water pump might be leaking water...or not circulationt he water

16 Inspect RADIATOR Obstructed radiator core or radiator cooling fins.
Your Clutch on your fan could be bad. Also if your fan shroud is gone it can do that. The radiator could need flushed. You timing could be advanced too much. You might have to go with a hotter thermostat ( doing this gives the antifreeze in the radiator more time to cool down ). Your water pump could be getting weak. As far as the shutting down on the road, It might be getting your coil too hot and shorting it out or something like that. Post again with more symptoms on the shut down for a better answer.



I would start by getting a good radiator flush from the local parts store. Check to see if the fan blades on your truck seem loose, and then spin it too see how much resistance it has. It should be hard to spin but not turn the pulleys. If it spins too easy or does not spin it is bad. Also make sure the belt(s) are tight enough. Next I would check the timing to make sure it is ok. This is less likely but I have seen it cause overheating before.
