Changing the thermostat in a 1994 Ford Ranger with a 4.0?

There is no possible way I can get to the bolts without disassembling something else. Can someone help me who has alread done this before?
Changing the thermostat in a 1994 Ford Ranger with a 4.0?
Do a lot of search on the internet I did for my car and finally found pictures and even step by step instructions. If you Research it enough you should be able to do it. The thermostat is located where the upper radiator hose is connected to the engine block. Just take your time You could also look it up at auto zone and advance auto parts they have some helpful info.

Thermostat should be right under the housing that your upper radiator hose ties in to.

  • I have a 1998 ford truck that keeps getting hot on me. I have changed thermostat, coolant. What can it be?

My truck runs fine on highway, when i get into stop and go traffic it begins to get hot. Sometimes the engines shuts off on the highway.

Have you tried checking your radiator? Make sure there is the proper amount of water and coolant. Also, check your oil. Make sure all your fluids are at their proper levels.
I have a 1998 ford truck that keeps getting hot on me. I have changed thermostat, coolant. What can it be?
how does the radiator look? is it clean or does it have a ton of dirt clogging the fins on the radiatior? also check your waterpump
the radiator might be clogged... after you drive it for a couple days and if the fluid is a darker color then your radiator is dirty,,

another one could be that your fan might be malfunctioning..

or their might be a glitch on the computer that tells the thermostat to open and close .. which wont give the engine enough water that it needs...

plust the water pump might be leaking water...or not circulationt he water

just take it to the mechanic..
1 Inspect ANTIFREEZE NEEDED Coolant level low or flow is restricted.

2 Inspect BELT Incorrectly routed, adjusted, tensioned, missing, or worn water pump belt(s).

4 Inspect RADIATOR CAP Worn or damaged radiator cap

5 Inspect THERMOSTAT Thermostat stuck closed

6 Inspect FAN BLADE Broken, missing, or defective fan blade(s).

8 Inspect WATER PUMP Damaged, worn or leaking water pump.

10 Inspect COOLING FAN CONTROL Faulty cooling fan control or circuit.

11 Inspect COOLING FAN SWITCH - RADIATOR Faulty radiator cooling fan switch or circuit.

12 Inspect ENGINE TEMPERATURE SENSOR Faulty engine temperature sensor or circuit.

13 Inspect TEMPERATURE SWITCH Damaged or faulty temperature switch or temperature switch circuit.

14 Inspect FAN CLUTCH Worn, loose or faulty fan clutch.

15 Inspect PORTED VACUUM SWITCH Damaged, leaking, or faulty ported vacuum switch.

16 Inspect RADIATOR Obstructed radiator core or radiator cooling fins.
Your Clutch on your fan could be bad. Also if your fan shroud is gone it can do that. The radiator could need flushed. You timing could be advanced too much. You might have to go with a hotter thermostat ( doing this gives the antifreeze in the radiator more time to cool down ). Your water pump could be getting weak. As far as the shutting down on the road, It might be getting your coil too hot and shorting it out or something like that. Post again with more symptoms on the shut down for a better answer.

I would start by getting a good radiator flush from the local parts store. Check to see if the fan blades on your truck seem loose, and then spin it too see how much resistance it has. It should be hard to spin but not turn the pulleys. If it spins too easy or does not spin it is bad. Also make sure the belt(s) are tight enough. Next I would check the timing to make sure it is ok. This is less likely but I have seen it cause overheating before.

I hope that I have been helpful. Good Luck
I have a 1997 F-150. I had the same problem. It turned out that I had to get the radiator replaced. Runs like a champ now.

Volkswagen jetta 97 overheats how to change thermostat?

My volkswagen Jetta 1997 overheats and fan does not come on. I want to change the thermostat. Is it hard. Where do find it under the hood? Is it hard to do this? Can I get a manual on the internet that shows me how? Thanks

I would suggest that before you start looking ar replacing the thermostat, that you try and isolate the problem.

    a. You mention the fan does not come on. - Have you checked the fuse for the fan.

    b. Have you checked if the fan motor is functional. - This is easily done by applying 12 v from the battery directly onto the fan motor leads. (you do not have to worry about which is positive or negative for this test.)

    c. Are you sure that the sensor unit to switch on the fans is working. Generally found at bottom of radiator. I while back I was puzzled with exactly the same problem. Changed thermostat, checked if fans worked by supplying power directly to them, only to discover it was the sensor unit not working. Did not switch on as temperature rose.

After checking the above three items I would then do the following checks

    1. Is V- belt driving pump not loose and slipping.

    2. Check in vicinity of pump if there are a few drips of coolant dripping under the pump it is likely the pump but remember the coolant may not make it to the ground.

for following tests engine must be warm - so make sure the top radiator hose gets warm after 5 minutes

    3. Pump impeller that may have sheared. To check if pump is operating, take of radiator cap and run car for a while, you should be able to see water circulating (movement of water (will not occur while engine is cold as thermostat stops flow). - if you can move the throttle with you hand under the hood, cables running to a connector on springs when you hit the throttle is should suck the fluid down with the radiator cap off.

    4. Thermostat not opening - as above, but no indication of water movement even when engine is hot

    ----------------

Note sometimes difficult to distinguish between last two.

There is hose that goes from top of radiator on front driver side ,follow that hose ,its about foot long, and connects to plastic housing, that has2 screws on it connected on engine, you will have to take the clamp of the hose and unscrew those 2 screws ,under plastic/thermostat housing is thermostat, and same way you take thermostat off put new one in and clamp the hoses.and your done.

And yes look on e-bay for vw manuel/repair book
yeah, we need to know what motor you have. if its the two liter, its a real total bee-otch. if its a vr its a little easier.
What engine? You may have a water pump issue. Try giving us as much info as you can.

Overheating 99' Chrysler Concorde and changing the thermostat?

My 99' Chrysler Concord with a 2.7 liter six cylinder is overheating in traffic. The electric fan does not turn on when the temp gauge is climbing. Would a themostat cause both of these problems. Is the thermostat right on top of the block under the line to the radiator like in older cars? The last car I changed a thermostat in was a '75 AMC Jeep CJ-5 so I am a little behind on the technology. Any help or advice is welcome?

You have a thermal switch that senses temperature. It should have only one wire to it.When it closes on temp. rise,it sends a ground to the fan relay. If you jump out the wire on the thermal switch to ground, the fan should come on.(Make sure your ignition is on when you test this)If the fan comes on the thermal switch is bad.If the fan does not come on you need to find the relay and determine if it is bad or has a blown fuse to it.
Overheating 99' Chrysler Concorde and changing the thermostat?
Yes the stat is still on the block. However those electric fan motors also have a sensor, which could be the problem. In which case you may want to have them replaced. Use a jumper line and direct feed the power, bypassing the sensor, and run continually. Hook the line to switchable power source, like ignition. If you are going to change the stat, back-flush the cooling system first. Use a product like Zerex or Prestone raditor flush.
I don't think a thermostat would cause both problems. It would cause over heating if it was stuck closed but it would not prevent your fan from coming on. You should follow your top radiator hose to the engine block. The thermostat should be inside the hose.

The fan may not be coming on because you might have a blown fuse or possibly a solenoid or relay is not functioning correctly by letting the voltage through to turn on the fan or the fan may not be grounded. I would say that there should be a device to let electricity through to the fan when the engine reaches a certain temperature to turn on the fan but I don't know what it is. On my prizm it was caused by a relay in the fuse box.

How to change thermostat 1994 chevy suburban? why isnt temp gauge working?

i need to know how to change thermostat 1994 chevy suburban... i heard its easy but i have never done it before, also wondering if anyone knows why my temp. gauge isnt working and what would make it work?? my car overheated today and i heard i should change the thermostat but i also would like to get the temp gauge working so i know next time there is a problem lol thanks in advance!

There could be a lot of reasons for OVERHEATING.

    1st reason (Low fluid level)

2nd reason Thermostat isn't working properly

3rd reason (Fluid needs to be replaced)

4th reason (water belt is loose)

5th reason (air compressor was aerating and getting air pockets )

6th reason (Air Fan doesn't work properly)

Try to remove the thermostat and drive for few days and if everything will be okay than just replace the thermostat with new one.

You can get thermostat from any parts store or on ebay.

Gauge needs to be fixed too, check the fuses.
it is very easy. just two bolts. what you will do is basically fallow the upper radiator hose too a little metal piece comming off of the front of your block. take this off and the thermostat is sitting inside there REMEMBER WICH WAY IT IS SITTING SO YOU DONT PUT IT IN BACKWARDS!! LOL(most likely the front) before youe take this out though take the radiator cap off just to relieve pressure in the system if there is any. and colant will spill out obliviously so get something to catch it. and your gauge is most likely not working because your ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor is not working. this also can cause your engine not to run to its peak performance. some cars have two ect's and some have one: one to control a gauge, and one for an input for the computer. but that is just a hunch at what could be the prob. good luck hope this helps
Can we assume its a 350 %26quot;V8%26quot;..the Thermostat can be found at the opposite end of the %26quot;Top Radiator Hose looking from the radiator, in other words where the radiator hose hooks to the engine. Its a Aluminum adapter plate with two machine bolts. You remove those two bolts after you have removed the hose and you will find the thermostat. Notice how its mounted in there..and replace with a new one with a new gasket.

The Temperature gauge sensor will be on the right side as you face the engine, near the first spark plug. It looks like a brass plug with a wire connected to the center of it...

Both parts are very easy to replace.

I have a 2000 vw bug and i need help in changing the thermostat or the water pump?

i need the location of the water pump or for the thermostat thank you|||The water pump is timing belt driven and is under the plastic timing cover on passenger side. These water pumps have a history of breaking, due to the fact they have a plastic impeller and it shears off the shaft, which causes the engine to overheat. First you want to remove the thermostat and then check the water pump. Follow the lower radiator hose to where it connects to the engine. That flange is where the thermostat is at. After you remove the thermostat you can shine a light in the hole and put your finger in there, if the impellar of the water pump moves, it needs to be replaced. If it does, then you might as well replace the timing belt and tensioner, seeing how you have to remove it to get the water pump off.

Changing the thermostat on a 1999 Volkswagen new beetle?

bs i have a new volkswagen you can work on them fine and if you dont have the tool go to the store and buy it.

basicly follow the top tube on the radiator to the engine or sometimes plastic tube on the engine.

the piece that bolts to the engine is where the thermostat is all you will need to do is un bolt it and change the thermostat but make sure you put it in in the right direction. rebolt the tube assembly back on. and put some more coolant in if you lost some.

i own a 2001 glx passat 5 speed|||Unless u r a mechanic you wont be able to work on a VW, the newer ones require special tools, take it to a dealership|||ziggy is right, you follow the hose that comes off the very top of the rad (usually top left corner) all the way to the engine and it%26#039;d most likely be 2 bolts into the engine block. You loosen it and there should be your thermostat(it%26#039;s not bolted to anything you can just take it out), slip the new one in and voala. All you%26#039;ll need is probably like 1/2%26quot; drive or something.
